Bacterial Cell

A properly labelled bacterial cell diagram.

Not properly labelled, nor drawn, it’s missing a mesosome…

To clear some confusion: There is a controversy surrounding the “mesosome”. But many papers have disproved the hypothesis that the mesosome is an organelle. It as been proved that it is an artifact introduced when cells are chemically fixed before being observed under the microscope. Here are some papers I found in this regard:

Sousa JC, Polónia JJ, Macedo MA, Parente AM (1976). “Bacterial mesosomes. Real structures or artifacts?”. Biochim. Biophys. Acta 443 (1): 92–105. http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/0005-2736(76)90493-4

Ebersold HR, Cordier JL, Lüthy P (1981). “Bacterial mesosomes: method dependent artifacts”. Arch. Microbiol. 130 (1): 19–22.
